Jay Ottaway

When Jay Ottaway and his wife purchased their new house, they knew they wanted to make it as energy efficient as it was beautiful. “We found a 100 year-old fixer upper. It was in pretty bad shape, but we knew that if we made it energy efficient and if it had its own renewable energy source that would be a huge selling point in the future.”
Jay was undaunted by the renovation project: as a songwriter, music producer, husband, and father to two young children, he’s accustomed to wearing many hats. He worked with SunBug to design a solar electric system that was in keeping with the look of the century-old home. “Part of the charm of the house is having this old New England look, and we wanted to preserve that.” SunBug’s solution is barely visible from the street. “You can pull in and not even notice them… most people don’t even know we have solar panels."While Jay saw solar as a smart place to put his money, he was also motivated by his four and five year old kids. “Part of it was to make that statement – to our children and to our community - that we are concerned about the environment. Hopefully solar is something that will catch on, and more and more people will make a change.”
